The class is fifty minutes. The day around it is not. Most of us arrive at Pilates from somewhere — a desk, a school run, a train — and leave for somewhere else. So the real question isn't only what to wear to Pilates. It's what to wear to, during and after it, without carrying a second wardrobe.
Here's how we think about it.
Start with what the class asks of you
Pilates is close, precise work. Your instructor needs to see your alignment, and you need to feel the mat without fabric bunching underneath you. That means a few simple rules for the base layer.
- Fitted, not tight. Loose tops ride up during roll-downs and inversions. A long-line top or a supportive bra keeps you covered and lets your teacher see your spine.
- Full length or close to it. High-waisted leggings stay put through leg circles and bridges. Look for a no-front-seam construction so nothing digs in when you fold forward.
- Squat-proof fabric. There is a lot of bending. You want to think about your breath, not your leggings.
- Grip socks for studio classes. Many reformer studios ask for them. Mat classes are often barefoot.
Our Halter Neck Flow was designed with this kind of session in mind. It is long-line, not cropped, with a built-in bra made for lifting and flowing movement. Pair it with the Essential Leggings, which are high-waisted, full length and squat-proof, with a side pocket for your locker key. If you prefer a separate bra, the Balance Sports Bra has adjustable straps and a soft, buttery feel against the skin.
The journey there: think in layers
On the way to class, you are cold. Ten minutes into the session, you are not. Afterwards, as your body cools, you will be cold again. Layers solve all three moments.
A good Pilates layer should be:
- Easy on, easy off. You will take it off in a studio changing room or at the side of the mat. Nothing with fiddly fastenings.
- Relaxed enough to go over your kit without flattening it or feeling restrictive.
- Smart enough for the rest of the day. This is the part most people forget.
The Revive Sweatshirt is our answer. It is a relaxed fit in a warm sand beige, with ribbed cuffs and hem that give it quiet structure. It sits over a halter top or bra cleanly, and it looks considered with jeans as much as with leggings. On colder mornings, swap it for the Recovery Hoodie — the hood earns its place on a damp London walk to the studio.
After class: the part that matters most
This is where most Pilates outfits fall down. You leave feeling long and loose, then catch your reflection in a café window looking like you've just left the gym.
The fix is one swap, not a full change.
- Swap leggings for joggers. The Restore Joggers have a wide-leg fit and a supportive stretch waistband, with adjustable hems so you can wear them long over trainers or gathered at the ankle. They go straight over your leggings if you're in a hurry.
- Keep the sweatshirt on. A neutral layer over your training top does most of the work.
- Carry one good bag. The Two Tone Tote is 100% cotton and big enough for a mat towel, a change of top and your laptop.
Temperature: what changes through the year
| Season | To class | After class |
|---|---|---|
| Autumn / winter | Leggings, long-line top, sweatshirt, hoodie or coat over the top | Joggers over leggings, sweatshirt stays on, warm socks |
| Spring | Leggings, top, sweatshirt | Sweatshirt or a clean Reset Tee |
| Summer | Shorts or leggings, top, light layer for the air-con | Tee over your top, Motion Shorts or joggers |
Studios run warm in winter and cool in summer. A layer you can take off and put back on matters more than the forecast.
Three Pilates outfits that work all day
The early class before work. Halter Neck Flow and Essential Leggings in Black Beauty. Revive Sweatshirt over the top. Restore Joggers and trainers in your tote for the walk to the office.
The lunchtime reset. Balance Sports Bra and Essential Leggings under your work clothes, or changed into quickly. Revive Sweatshirt on the way back so you're not sitting at your desk in a sports bra.
The slow Saturday. Recovery Hoodie, Restore Joggers and a pair of find your antidote Essential Socks. Class, coffee, market, home. Nothing to change out of.
A note on colour
Neutrals do a lot of quiet work here. Sand, ganache, navy and black all mix with each other, so whatever you pull from the drawer at 6.45am will go together. It's also why we built our first collection around a small palette. Quick answers
Can I wear loose clothes to Pilates? You can, but fitted pieces are easier. Loose tops can slide during inversions, and your instructor will find it harder to check your alignment.
Do I need special socks? For reformer classes, many studios ask for grip socks. Check with your studio before your first session.
What should I wear over my Pilates kit? A relaxed sweatshirt or hoodie that you would happily wear for the rest of the day. That one piece does most of the work.
How do I keep my Pilates clothes in good shape? Wash them cool and skip the tumble dryer. Our care guide for activewear covers the rest.
